THE BOOK THREE CUPS OF TEA HAS INSPIRED MILLIONS...

Racing for Peace through Education...

Picture
The goal of this fundraiser hosted by the Xavier University ROTC program, commanding the Miami University Army ROTC, is to raise capacity for increased education of young children, specifically girls, in Pakistan and Afghanistan as well as raising awareness of the necessity for this aspect of international reconstruction and development efforts. As the United States military, as well as numerous armies and nations of the World, work diligently to enhance the economic, governmental, social, and security pillars of stability in Afghanistan, actions on the part of all people of all nations can provide instrumental changes that will bring about peace for the people of the Afghan nation. Pennies for Peace is one of the most breathtaking achievements to bring success to the people of Afghanistan, helping to educate more than 55,000 children to date.

Pennies for Peace, a program of the 501(c)3 non-profit organization, Central Asia Institute, was founded by Greg Mortenson. Greg is the co-founder and executive director of Central Asia Institute, and co-author of the #1 NY Times Best-seller, Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace…One School At A Time.

The Pennies for Peace service-learning program began at Westside Elementary School in River Fall, WI in 1994, when students, through their own initiative, raised 62,340 pennies to help Greg build his first school in Pakistan.

While a penny may not provide for a great deal in many prospering countries around the World, a few pennies can bring about a tremendous amount of change for children without education in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

How pennies provide education and eventually peace...

Captain Mike and Doug of the Central Asia Institute discuss the initial steps for providing a small very rural village along the Afghanistan and Pakistan Border assistance for educating the local children. The village of nearly 4000 people takes more than 8 hours to reach after leaving the paved road and then all supplies must be trekked up the mountain for more than a mile. Within a year of beginning this process the village now has a 3 room school house to educate the children of not only this village, but also two nearby villages.
